Enough Keyword Density?
Keyword density is the ratio of a keyword that is being searched for versus the total number of words appearing on your web page. For example, let’s assume there are 200 words on your homepage and your main keyword appears 10 times. You will get the keyword density for that word by dividing 10 by 200 and expressing it as a percentage. (5%) A good keyword density is between 4-6%. There isn’t a real “set in stone” rule for keyword density but it does seem like more than this percentage may cross the line into spamming and that will get you penalized or worse, banned by the major search engines. The fact that there is no set rule means you don’t really know if your keyword density is not enough or too much. I have also found that different search engines have a different tolerance level for keyword density in terms of what degree is allowed before a penalty is imposed. The best advice is to keep your text natural and try not to “stuff” in keywords where they really don’t fit. You can check your keyword density prior to upload by copying and pasting you page (excluding HTML) in to a word processing software and use it to count total words and then count the keyword you are checking and use the formula above to figure density. An even easier way is to use one of the many free keyword density checkers you can find online. I like the one from SEO Chat. Once you have all your keywords in the right density range, upload it and hopefully it will now score highly in the search engine results. All the major search engines consider keyword density in their algorithm. There is not much knowledge as to how much relevance is given to this factor but is does effect the way your page is ranked. Density is critical because not enough keywords and you will not rank for it and too many keywords and you will be penalized (or worse) for spamming. If you write your content with the user in mind while keeping one eye on using keywords when appropriate, you will be on the right track to building a high ranking site. Popularity: 6%
