It’s Here - Safari for Windows

Apple released their web browser, Safari, for windows and so far about 1 million window users have downloaded it. OK, me included. To say it is better than Internet Explorer really doesn’t mean much, what isn’t? It is however reported to be faster than Firefox 2.0, to me that was worth seeing.

Though the 3.0 was very quickly followed by a 3.0.1 release to fix security issues, that isn’t all I see wrong with Safari. The major flaw I see with it is it is very much Mac like still and the fonts seem a little off as well as resizing the windows are set and can not be adjusted. I know Apple did this because the IPhone will run multiple programs and of course that means Windows based programs, but they have a long way to go.

You can download it here and all it means is there is one more browser to check and see if our sites look like there suppose to, but if Apple plans on competing in the windows browser world, they have a lot of catching up to do.

On Page Optimization

The last few posts have been keyword based and how to search and find the right keywords, keyword density and the like.  Now that you have the right keywords, what do you do about it?  Here are a few suggestions about optimizing your online page.  For this article I will assume we picked three keywords: world travel, discount travel and travel destination. (Just picked these from thin air)

  • Title

The first thing you have to pay attention to is the title of the page.  This is the wording that appears on the top of the web browser windows and is vital to having good ranking.  Choose a title that contains the main keywords from your list.  You do not want to use a title like “world travel discount travel and travel destination”,   mainly because it makes no sense but also it could be considered spam by the search engines.  Equally as bad would be a title like, “My First Web Site”, it does not contain any keywords or would it give anyone visiting (especially search engine spiders) any indication what your site is about. In this example I would choose, “World Discount Travel Destinations” as a title.  It makes sense, contains all the main keywords and does a good job representing what the site is about.

  • Meta Tags

Keyword meta tags are not used as much, if any, by the major search engines but I always include a good keyword selection in a keyword meta-tag.  Why? The key reason is that I want traffic from all search engines not just the major ones and some of those rely on the keyword meta-tag.

The description meta-tag is used and Google for one uses it as the description in their listings.  You need to write a good concise description and make sure you add in the main keywords you want to optimize for.  Again a VERY important factor here is that it should make sense!  In our example, of possible description would be, “Get all the latest on world travel, popular travel destinations and discount travel packages in one website”.

If you do not use a description meta-tag Google, and the rest will pull a section of text that they think is important to your site.  After spending as much time as you have finding the right keywords, isn’t a good idea to make sure the right description is picked by you and not a search engine spider?

  • Main Section

The main content of your page should include the main keywords spread out with the right density.  4-6% is usually a good density to try to obtain.   Read more about keyword density.

  • Heading Tags and More

<H1> and <H2> header tags along with bold, italicizing, underlining and <alt> image tags tell the search engines that the words being emphasized are important.  To add extra strength to your main keywords, use some of the techniques listed above.  Again though I emphasize that using the header tags, etc., make sure that the content makes sense to your readers and looks appealing.

  • How a Spider Reads

The search engine spiders that visit your site gathering information, read your site from the top left to the bottom right.  Try to include your main keywords at the top of the page as well as at the bottom.  In our example having our title wrapped in <H1> tags at the beginning of our page and having our main keywords listed in our footer would be a good example.  (Linking our keywords to a page within our site in the footer is better, that though is another article)
